November
24 in Sarajevo Marks the Beginning of the First Bosnia International
Music Festival
Sarajevo, November 17,
2005. November 24 through December 8, the people of
Sarajevo will have an opportunity to see a series of concerts
as part of the Bosnia International Music Festival (BIMF). The
festival will last for two weeks and, as part of the main program
in Bosniak Institute, Dom Armija and Narodno Pozoriste, it will
feature performances by renowned members of global and Bosnian
classical scene, including Ursula Oppens, Mykola Suk, Virko
Baley, Lorenzo Di Bella, Fabio Bidini, Sonemus, Sarajevo Philharmonic,
String Quartet Chamber Theatre 55 and Adema Pljevljak. The festival’s
six major concerts will represent artists from five countries,
including United States, Ukraine, Germany, Italy and Bosnia
and Herzegovina and will mark the premieres of two compositions,
one Bosnian and one global.
“International Music Festival “Bosnia”
is a unique cultural milestone in Bosnia and Herzegovina, uniting
elements such as commissioned classical pieces based on sevdalinka
, solo performances, chamber music and symphony orchestra,”
said Zemira Maslesa, director of the festival, pianist and composer
who is pursuing her masters degree in piano and composition
at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
The festival helps restore artistic collaboration
in Bosnia, at the same time building Sarajevo as a cultural
center of the world of classical music, in Europe and abroad.
In addition, the festival provides outlets for students from
Bosnia and Herzegovina to network with other musicians from
Europe and abroad through master classes, which are for students
of Music Academy in Sarajevo free of charge.
Bosnia International Music Festival also encourages
worldwide interest in Bosnian cultural heritage and its music
tradition. The festival’s organizational committee collaborated
with world-renowned composers to create compositions inspired
by traditional Bosnian music. For example, the festival will
mark the world premiere of a composition titled “Floating
Reeds” by an American composer Virko Baley who was comissioned
by Zemira Maslesa to develop a piece based on sevdalinka. According
to Baley, “The piece is an imaginary reflection of Bosnia’s
nature as seen in pictures and film.”
The festival will also mark the Bosnian premiere
of a composition by Frederic Rzewski titled “United People
Will Never Be Defeated,” which will be preformed by Ursula
Oppens, the critically acclaimed pianist known for her collaborations
with composers. Oppens, who received a Grammy nomination for
her performance of this piece, was responsible for its creation
because she commissioned it from Rzewski. "The People United
Will Never be Defeated" is a set of 36 variations on a
theme by a Chilean composer Sergio Ortega, who composed it several
weeks before the September 1973 coup in Chile. This song became
an anthem of the Democratic movement in Chile and was sung at
many peaceful demonstrations throughout the country.
This ambitious and passionate composition came
to Rzewski in a moment of inspiration, representing universal
longing for happiness associated with peace. Incorporating it
in the program for this year, which marks the tenth anniversary
of peace in Bosnia, the festival’s committee pays its
respect to the victims of the recent war and citizens of Bosnia
and Herzegovina who fought to maintain their lives and their
dignity.
Among other performers, it is important to note
the pianist Maestro Mykola Suk, the winner of Liszt Competition,
who at the end of 1970s performed in Bosnia and taught at the
world-renowned universities such as Moscow Conservatory, Columbia
University, Boston New England Conservatory and University of
Nevada Las Vegas. On December 8, Suk will perform with Sarajevo
Philharmonic Orchestra in a piece conducted by Bosnian conductor
Emir Nuhanovic.
It is also important to note Fabio Bidini, the
finalist of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition,
as well as the brilliant young pianist Lorenzo Di Bella, the
winner of 2005 International Competition for Young Pianists
in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz.
One of the interesting pieces, which will be represented
at the festival includes “Writings from the Ancient Graves,”
a collection of songs written by Zemira Maslesa inspired by
ancient gravestones of the Bosnian prince Nenac and the young
woman Asta. This composition will be preformed by soprano Adema
Pljevljak.
It is important to add that the festival could
not be realized without the support of its sponsors. Official
sponsors of the Bosnia International Music Festival include
Bosniak Institute in Sarajevo (Foundation of Mr. Adil-bey Zulfikarpasic),
Hotel Saraj, University of Nevada Las Vegas (College of Fine
Arts and Music Department), Northwestern University (Music Department),
Ministry of Culture and Sport of Sarajevo Cantone, Torlic Family
Trust, MediaStream, CityLine, MetroMedia, International Competition
for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz. Media sponsors
include BHTV and BH Radio 1 while InfoBar participates as the
marketing sponsor of the festival.
The festival also received support from the Embassy
of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the United States, the Consulate
of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Turkey, Academy of Bosnia and Herzegovina
in New York, University of Sarajevo Rectory, Sarajevo Graduate
School of Business, Center for Balkan Development (Friends of
Bosnia) and Reconciliation and Culture COOperative Network (RACOON)
based in the United States, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina
Institute, based in England.
The majority of performances will be held in Bosniak
Institute (Mula Mustafe Baseskije Street 21), with the exception
of the first concert, which will take place in Dom Armija, and
the final concert with Sarajevo Philharmonic in the National
Theatre. All tickets are free of charge. For more information

U
Sarajevu 24. Novembra Pocinje Internacionalni Muzicki Festival
"Bosna"
Sarajevo, 17. novembra, 2005.
odrzati niz koncerata klasicne muzike pod okriljem novog Internacionalnog
Muzickog Festivala "Bosna.” Festival ce trajati oko
dvije sedmice, a u okviru glavnog programa u Bosnjackom Institutu,
Domu Armije, i Narodnom Pozoristu bosanskohercegovackoj publici
ce se predstaviti velika imena svjetske i domace klasicne muzicke
scene, medju kojima su Ursula Oppens, Mykola Suk, Virko Baley,
Lorenzo Di Bella, Fabio Bidini, Sonemus, Sarajevska Filharmonija,
Njemacka, i Bosna i Hercegovina, a festival ce takodje oznaciti
dvije premijere - svjetsku i bosansku.
“Internacionalni Muzicki Festival "Bosna"
i klavira.
Festival takodje promovise bosansku kulturnu bastinu
i njenu muzicku tradiciju. Naime, festivalski odbor je angazovao
eminentne svjetske kompozitore za kreiranje kompozicija baziranih
na tradicionalnoj muzici Bosne i Hercegovine, s time razvijajuci
americkog kompozitora Virko Baley, “Floating Reeds”,
U rijecima
Baley-a, “djelo je imaginarna reflekcija bosanske prirode
vidjene na slikama i filmu.”
Festival ce takodje oznaciti bosansku premijeru
kompozicije Frederic Rzewski pod nazivom "Ujedinjeni Narodi
Nikad Nece Biti Pobjedjeni", u izvedbi Ursule Oppens, eminentne
jer ga je narucila of Rzewskog. “Ujedinjeni Narodi Nikad
napisao par sedmica pred septembarski puc 1973 u Cile-u. Pjesma
u instantom momentu inspiracije, predstavljajuci opceljudsku
i opcevremensku teznju za srecom koju zivot u miru donosi. Ukljucivajuci
uspjeli sacuvati svoju dostojnost.
poput Moskovskog Konzervatorija, Columbia University, Boston
New England Conservatory i University of Nevada Las Vegas. 8.
palicom Emira Nuhanovica.
Takodje bi trebalo pomenuti Fabio Bidini, Van Cliburn
finalistu, kao i mladog brilijantnog pijanistu Lorenzo di Bella,
pobjednika Horowitz 2005 Piano Competition.
mlade djevojke Aste, u izvedbi sopranistice Ademe Pljevljak.
bez podrske sponzora. Oficijelni pokrovitelji Internacionalnog
Muzickog Festivala "Bosna" su Bosnjacki Institut u
Sarajevu (Fondacija gospodina Adil-bega Zulfikarpasica), Hotel
Saraj, University of Nevada Las Vegas (College of Fine Arts
i Music Department), Northwestern University (School of Music),
Ministarstvo za Kulturu i Sport Kantona Sarajevo, Torlic Family
Trust, MediaStream, CityLine, MetroMedia, Horowitz Competition,
a medijski sponzori su BHTV1 i BH Radio 1. InfoBar je marketing
sponzor.
Festival takodje podrzavaju Ambasada BiH u SAD,
Konzulat Bosne i Hercegovine u Turskoj, Akademija Bosne i Hercegovine
u New York-u, Rektorat Sarajevskog Univerziteta, Sarajevo Graduate
School of Business, Center for Balkan Development (Friends of
Bosnia), Reconciliation and Culture COOperative Network (RACOON),
(ul. Mula Mustafe Baseskije 21), sa izuzetkom prvog koncerta
u Domu Armije, i zavrsnog koncerta sa filharmonijom u Narodnom
Pozoristu. Sve ulaznice su besplatne. Za vise informacija o
